Nepal Flood Relief Fund AI Scam? Man Allegedly Dupes Public of ₹1.2 Lakh
An alleged AI-powered scam targeting donations for Nepal flood victims has come to light, with a person accused of creating a fake relief appeal and diverting donations to his own account.
According to reports, the individual allegedly created a fake donation post claiming to support people affected by the floods. A personal QR code was reportedly embedded in the appeal, through which donations worth around ₹1.2 lakh were allegedly collected and redirected to the person's account.
The fake appeal is also said to have used AI-generated or manipulated images and misleading information to make the donation request appear genuine.
⚠️ Public Alert
During disasters such as floods and earthquakes, fraudulent donation appeals can spread rapidly online. People should verify the authenticity of a relief campaign and confirm that the QR code belongs to a legitimate government organisation or trusted charity before making any payment.
The incident highlights how AI technology, while useful for legitimate purposes, can also be misused to create convincing fake content and facilitate online scams.
