BJP Fields Vanathi Srinivasan in Coimbatore North; Congress Bets on Youth in Kavundampalayam & Singanallur

n a significant political development ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections scheduled for April 23, major parties have announced their candidates for key constituencies in Coimbatore.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded senior leader Vanathi Srinivasan (55) from the Coimbatore North constituency. Vanathi, who is currently the MLA from Coimbatore South and serves as the national president of the BJP Mahila Morcha, is considered a seasoned candidate. She notably won the 2021 election by defeating actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan.
Meanwhile, the Indian National Congress has opted for young leaders in the constituencies allotted to it under the DMK-led alliance.
In Kavundampalayam, the party has nominated K P Surya Prakash (27), who currently serves as the state president of the Tamil Nadu Youth Congress. He has previously held several organizational roles, including block in-charge within the Coimbatore Corporation Youth Congress.
For the Singanallur constituency, Congress has fielded V Shrinithi Mohan (37), the national secretary of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC). Shrinithi began her political journey with the BJP, later joined Makkal Needhi Maiam in 2021 and contested from Udumalet. She joined Congress in 2022 and rose to a national-level position in 2025.
While BJP is relying on experience by nominating a prominent leader like Vanathi Srinivasan in a key constituency under the AIADMK-led alliance, Congress is placing its bets on youthful energy and emerging leadership in Coimbatore.
The upcoming elections are expected to witness intense competition in these constituencies, reflecting a mix of experience and fresh political faces.
