An Indian airline captain has received widespread praise after a serious incident unfolded aboard a Flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30.
Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian national and Flydubai pilot, was injured during a violent altercation in the cockpit of Flight FZ1073, which was carrying 174 people.
According to reports, Machchhar was stabbed during the confrontation with the other pilot. During the incident, the aircraft rapidly lost altitude, triggering an emergency situation.
Despite being injured, Machchhar is reported to have helped open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and other crew members to intervene. Passengers and crew then helped restrain the other pilot.
Two Flydubai relief pilots who were travelling on the aircraft subsequently took control of the situation and helped divert the Boeing 737 to Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia, where the aircraft landed safely. All 174 people on board were accounted for and safe.
The incident attracted international attention, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praising the actions of those who helped prevent a potentially serious disaster. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also praised Captain Machchhar's courage.
Machchhar previously worked with SpiceJet for around 11 years before joining Flydubai in 2022. Reports say he has extensive experience flying Boeing 737 aircraft.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the cockpit incident, including its cause and motive. Flydubai has urged against premature speculation while the investigation continues.
The incident has highlighted the quick actions of the injured captain, passengers, cabin crew and other pilots who helped bring the aircraft to safety.
Captain Smit Machchhar's actions during the emergency have drawn international recognition as investigators continue to establish the full circumstances of the incident.
