Heavy Rain Alert for 22 Districts in Tamil Nadu Today; IMD Warns of Thunderstorms and Strong Winds
The Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rainfall in 22 districts of Tamil Nadu on June 2. Thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds up to 50 kmph are expected in several parts of the state.
The Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall warning for 22 districts across Tamil Nadu on June 2, citing favorable atmospheric conditions that are expected to trigger widespread rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across the state.
According to the weather department, an upper-air cyclonic circulation persists over the southeastern Arabian Sea off the south Kerala coast, extending up to an altitude of approximately 5.8 km. In addition, a trough extends from eastern Madhya Pradesh and adjoining Chhattisgarh to northern Tamil Nadu through Vidarbha, Telangana, and Rayalaseema, enhancing rainfall activity over the region.

Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds of 40–50 kmph is likely at isolated places in:

Heavy rain is expected to continue over Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Theni, Tiruppur, Tenkasi, Dindigul, Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, and Tiruvannamalai districts.

Temperature Outlook
From June 2 to June 6, no significant changes are expected in maximum temperatures across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. However, temperatures in some parts of northern interior Tamil Nadu may remain up to 2°C above normal.

For Chennai, the sky is expected to remain partly cloudy. Light rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning may occur in isolated areas of the city.

Fishermen Warning
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea on June 2.
Strong winds of 40–50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, are likely over the south Tamil Nadu coastal regions, the Gulf of Mannar, and the Kumari Sea area. Authorities have urged fishermen to exercise caution and avoid sea travel during this period.
The weather department has advised residents in the affected districts to stay alert for localized flooding, lightning activity, and strong winds while monitoring official weather updates.
