Indian athlete Vithya Ramraj created a major milestone in Indian athletics at the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, winning the bronze medal in the women’s 400m hurdles and setting a new national record.

Vithya completed the final in 54.75 seconds, securing third place and improving the long-standing Indian national record previously held by legendary athlete PT Usha. Usha had recorded a time of 55.42 seconds in the women’s 400m hurdles at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, a mark that had stood for 42 years.

Vithya had previously equalled Usha’s record at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, clocking 55.42 seconds. She has now improved the mark by a significant margin, becoming the new Indian national record holder in the event with her 54.75-second performance.

In the 2026 Asian Games final, UAE athlete Maryam Kareem won the gold medal with a time of 54.31 seconds, while Kazakhstan’s Adelina Zhems secured silver in 54.58 seconds. Vithya Ramraj finished third to take bronze.

The performance marks an important achievement in Vithya Ramraj’s athletics career and adds another significant chapter to the history of Indian women’s 400m hurdles.
