The Meteorological Department has issued a Yellow Alert for 16 districts across Tamil Nadu on June 1, warning of heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds.

According to the latest weather bulletin, an upper-air cyclonic circulation prevailing over the southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining south Kerala region is expected to trigger widespread rainfall activity across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal from June 1 to June 6.

Rain Forecast for June 2 and 3

Heavy rain is expected to continue over parts of western and northern Tamil Nadu, including the hill regions of Tirunelveli, along with Kanyakumari, Tenkasi, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Theni, Namakkal, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, and Tiruvannamalai districts.

Rain Forecast for June 4

Heavy rainfall is likely over the hill regions of Tirunelveli, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode, Salem, Dindigul, Theni, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, and Kanyakumari districts. The Yellow Alert remains in effect for these areas.

For Chennai and its suburbs, the sky is expected to remain partly cloudy. Light rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning may occur in some parts of the city on June 1.

Fishermen Warning

Fishermen have been advised to exercise caution as strong winds are likely over coastal areas of Kerala, Lakshadweep, and adjoining Maldives regions. Wind speeds may reach up to 55 kmph on June 2, making sea conditions rough.

During the 24-hour period ending Sunday morning, the highest rainfall in Tamil Nadu was recorded at Oothu in Tirunelveli district with 70 mm. Other significant rainfall figures include:

  • Thenparanadu (Tiruchirappalli) – 40 mm
  • Attur (Salem) – 40 mm
