Israeli Drone Strikes Kill 8 in Southern Lebanon Despite De-Escalation Efforts
Eight people were killed in Israeli drone strikes in southern Lebanon a day after US President Donald Trump announced efforts to reduce tensions between Israel and Hezbollah. The attacks have raised concerns over regional stability.
Fresh violence erupted in southern Lebanon as Israeli drone strikes reportedly killed eight people, just a day after efforts were announced to reduce tensions between Israel and Hezbollah.
The developments have raised concerns about the prospects for long-term stability in the Middle East, particularly at a time when diplomatic efforts are underway to prevent a broader regional conflict.
According to reports, tensions escalated after Israel warned of possible military action in Hezbollah-controlled areas south of Beirut. Following discussions between Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump stated that both sides had agreed to reduce hostilities and that Israeli forces would not enter Beirut.
The Lebanese government subsequently announced that Hezbollah would halt attacks on Israel if military operations against Beirut were avoided. However, military activity has reportedly continued in southern Lebanon despite these diplomatic assurances.
One of the deadliest incidents occurred on a road connecting Marjayoun and Nabatieh in southern Lebanon, where an Israeli drone strike hit a vehicle. Reports indicate that a dentist, James Karam, and his two children were among those killed.
Additional strikes in the villages of Jibshit and Toul reportedly claimed the lives of five more people, including Syrian workers. In response, Hezbollah launched missile attacks targeting advancing Israeli forces near border villages.
The renewed violence comes as Iran has reportedly suspended diplomatic talks while continuing to call for a comprehensive ceasefire in Lebanon. Analysts believe the latest escalation could further complicate international efforts aimed at securing a lasting peace in the region.
Meanwhile, the decision by Netanyahu to halt potential operations in Beirut following US intervention has sparked political criticism within Israel. Opposition voices have accused the government of yielding to American pressure and compromising national security interests.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned that any future attacks by Hezbollah could trigger a significantly stronger Israeli response, including potential military action against Beirut.
The situation remains highly volatile, with regional and international leaders closely monitoring developments amid fears of a wider conflict in the Middle East.
